Desperate Housewives Adoption Story Line

Did anyone else watch Desperate Housewives?

What did you think about the story line re Carlos and Gabby trying to adopt a baby?

I did think the fake pictures with the kids for their portfolio was kind of funny, but I didn't like the end where they met with the guy who was supposedly going to somehow find a baby for them. I know it's just a show, but I hope people don't really think that happens. Plus they gave him $20,000 - that's not even enough for a perfectly legal adoption.

I was halfway watching this only because it is on before Grey's Anatomy and that is MY SHOW. Everything comes to a standstill for me to watch that every sunday night. I really do wish that when they put stuff like that into shows that they would research it a little better. It sounded to me like they were going to be doing somethng illegal to get the baby..especially with Carlos just getting out of prison.

I thought $20k was too low for an adoption, too. And then I wondered whether the writers might have had them try harder to pursue a legitimate route. But then I figured, it's a fantasy show--it would probably seem too "ordinary" for them to adopt through more conventional means.

And, the more I think about it--do you think that Gabi is really stable enough to be a Mom? Would you want her character to parent a real child? I don't think I'd let her babysite mine--not even our 16 year old!

Yikes!

I figured the $20K was just a down payment to get the ball rolling.

DH & I sure felt the same way Carlos & Gabby did . . . uncomfortable about the fact we had to "market ourselves" to the birth mother. That's one of the reasons we went with IA instead of domestic - you get a referral when your name reaches the top of the list.

I'm looking forward to upcoming adoption adventures of Carlos & Gabby!

I really disliked how Gabby disrespected the potential birthmom. Saying she is some 'sl_tty cheerleader who got knocked up behind a 7-11'. She said some other nasty stuff too that made me want to reach into the screen and strangle her!

Actually, domestic adoption ranges from $5,000 to $30,000 +

The average, I would guess, is actually around $20,000.

Consider the fact that it cost less than $5000 to actually legally do a non-contested adoption - the additional fee's come from agencies/attorneys who bill for expenses like counseling and other administrative fees.

Many of the members of our forums who did self networking and used an attorney only for the legal aspect of the adoption, will tell you their fees were actually MUCH lower than $20,000.

okay guys i have to say,

i just started watching this show this season,
and it CRACKS ME UP!
i think everything is just SO exaggerated
and just off enoughto make it hilarious!

i dont think anyone in thier right minds would think
this show has much 'reality' base in it!

i think that's what makes is SO much fun!
i mean, who would REALLY go to an adoption agency and say that 'sl**** cheerleader' thing?!
that's so awful and 'off', that it fits with the rest of this crazy show.

just my $.02 on the only show i really try to make time for each week...it just TOO funny!

i actually agree with cris, the story is so far fetched....and i couldnt stop laughing.

but her character is all about that. which there were no surprises. its all about offending people....lol

so, because she is so offending, the story goes 'no birthmom would even consider them, so they have to 'buy' or 'steal' a baby.

its just so over the top that show.....

and now the perfect housewife is going to AA meetings....lol.

i hope people in AA arent offended, because thats a disease they are making fun of.

i find it funny and entertaining.

i mean, talk about over the top....when the 'unlegal' adoptive parents of that kid, ended up killing off the birthmom........how twisted was that.

i mean we can go on and on about how tasteless the show is, but its suppose to be tasteless...

just for entertainment sake......

Brandy is right. It is very reasonable to pay 20K for domestic adoption. We paid 14k.

I was hoping to find this thread here today! I was soooo offended by the story line, several of the comments made here. But, several of you are right, you have to take the entire show with a grain of salt, it is supposed to be absurd and over the top. (I still think I am slightly offended by Gabby's comments about the teenage ** though).

dyardley

too funny..........

am slightly offended by Gabby's comments about the teenage ** though).

i bet you that a few birth moms are offended because of the initials you just used to describe them...

i know you didnt mean it. but i found it funny as you were saying you were offended by the description of birthmoms, you went ahead and offended them on this board.

i know you didnt mean any harm in it, but just wanted to point that out to you.

As soon as I heard Gabby's comments I KNEW that it would be a topic if discussion here!

Sadly, I think that her comments are what SOME people actually think about the process...
have any of you had people assume that your child's birthmom was a teenager just because she placed the child for adoption? SO many people who aren't directly involved in the process have all sorts of assumptions about birthmothers and the process. When Gabby speaks on that show - she is often the voice of uneducated, people with stereotypical reasoning. If you have watched the show for very long, you've heard her make comments about nuns, mother-in-laws, teenage gardeners, and anyone else she can get her hands on.
Maybe this story line will make someone think twice when they make assumptions about birthmothers or adoptive parents, or the children. I sure hope so!
It will be interesting to see how this all works out, until then, I will watch with an open mind and even let myself chuckle when Gabby says something off the wall!

I am enjoying hearing other people's opinions, but I hope we can all agree not to take it so seriously!

Just my dos quetzales!

Oh - and Grey's Anatomy is wayyyy more worth my time than DH anyday! Although last night it was repeatedly interrupted with tornado warnings - I hope I didn't miss anything important!!

The previews for next week's show showed a pregnant woman at the door and Gabby saying she didn't want an ugly kid (or something along those lines).
