Question What should I not miss out on in Guate?!

We are going to Guate. Sat. and are going to take the day on Sunday to visit Antigua or the city (not sure) What should I do on my only day without baby in Guatemala. They are bringing Molly to us on Monday.
I want to buy keepsakes and one of those pretty dresses for her.
i know you all can help me out!!!

I loved Antigua, especially the Santa Clara ruins (we explored some other ruins as well). We liked the Casa Jade store which has a little museum area where a guide (free) will teach you about the jade. I purchased a ring to give Isabel when she is older. The Artisans market is nice.

Have a great time!

Love, Shelly

Having a hot chocolate or fresh fruit juice at Cafe Condessa in Antigua. It's right on the main square.

I agree that Antigua is not to be missed!! And the Jade Factory is terrific - I had two custom made necklaces made for my kids - they did an excellent job and the price was more than reasonable. So, if there is something you want and don't see - ASK! There is also a great little store a few doors down where I bought lots of outfits for the kids to wear as they get older. Nathan has worn a special Guatemalan outfit on all the special days we have had, and now I have more for the special days to come and a few matching outfits for the brother and sister once she is home.

Have a great time!!

If you have time in Guatemala City, I would go to Central Market, though I suggest having a driver go with you. Some would say do it alone, I just felt more comfortable and thought we had better bargaining power with someone who spoke Spanish. Go to the lower level to see the market where nationals buy their produce...after you've purchased a beautiful wool blanket (my favorite are the cream colored with blue) or five...at about $25/blanket. I think everyone needs a clay "chicken bus", choose your size, to hang on a ribbon on your Christmas tree. We also toured the National Palace with a guide who told us the history of Guatemala which is depicted on murals. Since our two of our children were born in Guatemala City, a tour of the city was important to me. We did Antigua on another trip and enjoyed that, but probably took the fast tour and missed much. Jade "factory" is very interesting, though don't expect that it's really a large building as we would say factory. If you're taking kids along, I would definitely recomend the zoo in Guat City and the Children's Museum...if not, skip them and go to the artisa market for more gifts!

While we were there, we had a full day to walk around Guatemala City. We stopped at a few restaurants and cafes and just soaked up the culture and enjoyed the pace. It was day that I will never forget - plus it was good exercise considering that the next four days were spent in the confines of the hotel.

Enjoy!
