How NEW does the $$ need to be?
We leave in just over a week for our first trip. We went to the bank and got lots of cash. We asked for newer bills, clean, etc. They went through all the drawers and gave us the best they had. I don't think any were "new", but they look pretty good...clean, etc. They said they could order some for us if we didn't think they were satisfactory. What was your experience? Thanks so much!

as long as it's not torn are marked or too worn it should be okay. We went to our bank when we found out that we were going to travel, about a week before, and they started pulling bills for us. None of them were mint but they were in fairly good condition. We never had any problems.
lionbird, people in Guatemala prefer to have bills that aren't too worn. If they don't approve of the bills then they will refuse to take them. Like I said, we never had a problem, just make sure they are good looking bills.

I had trouble at Burger King with a twenty where the president's face was faded from being folded too many times. I don't think they're as picky with the smaller bills like ones or fives.

We didn't have any problems with money except at the Embassy on our pick up trip. Make sure those bills are crisp with no tears. We had the tiniest of tiny pieces ripped from a corner of a $50 and they rejected it.

When I went to the bank, I was very picky about the money, the teller, thought that I was nuts.
We didn't have any problems at the embassy, but a friend of mine that had been there twie before said that both times they had money rejected b/c it wasn't crisp enough.

We didn't have any problems with any of our money. We did exchange most of it at the Marriott for quetzels. No one questioned anything.

We tried to get new ones at the bank as well, but they didn't have any. They gave us the best they had and it was fine.
