Question about readoption in OHIO
I was wondering IF you have adopted in Ohio if you can help me out on this one. I was posting on a post about people who DO NOT have to readopt if they do a visit trip. I went to the website to see if Ohio was one of those states but I don't understand all the lingo
Can someone please tell me the answer?Hugs Mindy |

It is my understanding that you do not have to readopt. However, if you want a US birthcertificate you have to readopt. Depending on which county you are in, you may or may not have to use an attorney to readopt.

I think it's actually called a recognition of foreign adoption, or something like that. You do it thru your county probate court... each county is different. We were able to get our child's name changed and then also get an Ohio birth certificate.

Each county does have different filing requirements BUT I believe there is a general rule that child must be in country for minimum of 6 months BEFORE submitting.
If you came home on IR3, you do NOT need to "readopt" as Ohio is one of the states with statute that recognizes PGN Protocolo as FINAL. Of course if you want name change and OH birth cert, then you do need to go through county court. I'm personally am upset with ours (Warren County). The woman was so incredibly rude on the phone- she said she wouldn't even GIVE ME the paprework to complete until baby was here for 6 months. And then its was "up to the judge" in determining when case would actually be heard - anywhere from 3 - 12 months. I don't know how true this is but it brought me to tears ... hasn't this journey been taxing enough? Can't something - ANYTHING be ... easy?

I live in Stark County and have no idea how it works here. My husband is a Sheriff's Deputy and next time he is at the court house...which is everyday...I will have to have him ask about our county's specific guidelines. THank you for all the info and I hope it goes smoother for everyone. I can't believe that woman made you cry..why do people have to be so rude!! It is true that the journey is taxing so something SHOULD be fairly easy. Guess not.

We just readopted in Ohio this week, no attorney and no waiting 6 months. We came home OCT 7, submitted the paperwork in January and had court this week. Like previous posters said, every county in Ohio is different. We are in Medina county.

All of us surround each other in Ohio! We live in Wayne County. You do have to wait 6 months until the hearing can be held, but you can have your homestudy visit by the court anytime before that and get all the paperwork filed, you just don't get the hearing until 6 months, and our court took it as the date the protocolo was signed, so our baby was actually only home about 4 months before she was readopted.
