State Issued Birth Certificates
Hi. Another question, sorry. Do you HAVE to have a state issued birth certificate for any reason? We live in Michigan (no readoption necessary), but we have not filed for a state issued birth cert. Will that be a problem?
Just wondering, thanks, Linda |

I also live in Michigan. You have to do a registration of Foreign birth and receiving a Michigan BC is part of that. We also filed a name change and her Michigan BC came in her new name. Hope this helps.

It might be advantagous to have one if not now but later on. When registering for school, camps, etc... It is relativly simple in Michigan to do.. we just got our bc's with a name change.
It also prevents you from having to always have the Guatemalan version which is in Spanish with the English Translation. Just seems to make things a lot eaiser. HTH, Denise

I don't live in MI, but my philosophy is that if there's any paperwork that I can get for my daughter, then I'll get it just to be safe.

I also live in Michigan. I agree with the others I would do it. That way it will be easy to get copies from the state any time you need one. It was so easy to do the recognition of foreign adoption - at least in our county. I called the juvenile division of the county court and they sent me a packet of information and forms. Then they send the order to the Dept. of Health and they issue the new BC. You can change your child's name at the same time too if you want to.
