Calling home from Guatemala.......

What is your opinion of the best way to call home while in Guatemala???

We went for a visit trip and had to use the hotel phone and it was $4 a minute.

We are waiting on Pink and I want to be able to phone home a few times.

Just want your opinions......

Thanks
Meghan

We rented a cell phone! It really was the most affordable thing to do! I was surprised how much we were able to call home on just one calling card!
We could rent the cell phone's right at the hotel we stayed at!

We always used an AT&T prepaid phone card at the Marriott. It worked out to about 50 cents a minute and was so easy to use from the room.

prepaid calling cards are the best! you can call from your room with no charge at least from the Marriott Hotel. You could buy them online if you are there. They will give you the pin number and that's it!

Google prepaid calling cards and you will find a lot of them to choose.

many blessings,

We bought a phone card in the gift shop at the Marriott. We also had our family call us instead of us calling them.

We actually called via computer while I was down there. I was not able to call but my husband and I set a time each night to be ready and able to chit chat. Ny using the pc it worked out to about .14 a minute. You neen to have a high speed modem to do it, though.

Good luck!

We stayed at The Westin and I couldn't get the pre-paid card to work on the visit. So, on pick up we rented a cell phone from the Business Center and it was very, very resonable and worked well, we could even receive calls as well.

I added an international calling plan to my cell phone for my most recent trip (about three weeks ago). I had no trouble with finding coverage in Guat and it was great for my family because it was the same as if I was home for them to call me. (and I didn't have to think about returning a rental, or having leftover/not enough minutes on a card...)

Skype

I took my laptop with me and used Skype (and Skypeout) everyday while I was in Guatemala to call home. If you call computer to computer, it is FREE. Otherwise, if you call from your computer to a cell phone or land line phone at home (via SkypeOut) the cost is 2 cents a minute. My SkypeOut bill was less than the bill the Marriott charged me for 3 local calls.

If you want to use Skype, you need to take your laptop, you need to purchase internet service at your hotel, and you need to take an earbud and a mike (you can purchase from Skype or you might already have this). You also have to download the free software from Skype.

I am not affiliated at all with Skype, I was just so very pleased with their service. Plus, the reception of every phone call was excellent!

Take Care,

Jen

If you buy the pre paid cards in the Marriott shop it is really inexpensive. I think it was $7 for 50minutes you use them in the lobby at the special phones there. I thought it was pretty cheap and easy and this is what I will use when I got Sunday...

The cell phones at the Marriott are about $15 a day. But, the last two times we were there, they were all rented out. We used the Ladatel (sp?) cards at the Marriott too, but you have to use the phones in the lobby. On our pick up trip, we went to the mall and bought a cell phone... I'm not sure it was the cheapest route ~ cheaper than calling from the room though ~ but it worked out for us since we did some traveling on that trip, and my dh can't be without a cell phone! It was about $65, and we bought prepaid minutes to use with it.
