My daughter was in a hogar in Antigua, it is run by an American women and is nothing like you hear or see of orphanages on TV. My daughter was 14 months old when we brought her home, she had been in the hogar for 7 months. She is the most well adjusted child I have ever seen, she is so easy going. My agency works with both this hogar and foster families, I didn't go into this looking for a child in a hogar but I am so glad that she received the care she did.
We were luck enough to go to the hogar 3 times during the process (twice to visit and once for pickup) and I was always impressed with the care the children were receiving and the love the nannies showed the children. Other than the occassional older child sitting in time out all of the children seemed happy and well cared for.

Our son was in a private hogar from age 1 month until he came home at 9.5 months.. we were told that the first night would be hard but after that 'he'll know you are his mama'. The first night was extremely hard for him, just during the sleeping hours, but then there were no other problems. I even brought a fellow adoptive mom with me and I was worried that he might not know which of his was his mommy, but I made sure I did just about everything for him and he knew. I'd like to think he remembered me from our visit trip when he was 5 months old.. I honestly think he did.. we really bonded on that visit trip.
Anyway.. we had a fantastic hogar run by a fantastic family and I would definitely adopt through them again. He was very healthy, very well taken care of and very obviously loved and well adjusted. We have had no attachment problems .. he prefers that 'mama' takes him with her instead of leaving him in the church nursery, but other than that, he's just perfect. Good luck and hope your story has a very special ending. Judy |

Our baby boy is with a wonderful foster family and he is one of the happiest, sweetest babies I have ever been around. He is surrounded by someone all of the time, they have a very large extended family and he is very secure and VERY loved and VERY ROTTEN (I might add
)I do not have any experience with a hogar. Sorry!
