OT: Can a 2 year old ride a bike?
Hello! When can a child learn to ride a bike? I know a child can sit on the bike fairly young, but when do they comprehend how to peddle. Let me know when your youngsters learned. Thanks. I would really like to buy a bike for Spencer. I am getting a little anxious. He will be 2 in March.

Liam got a tricycle when he was 18 months. He loved to sit on it, and knew where to put his feet, but didn't actually get pedalling on his own till 2.5. Now he's a speed demon on it!
His tricycle came with a pole that parents can use to push / steer, until kiddo gets the hang of it! Very useful. I don't want to have Liam use training wheels, so I think he will be on a trike until he's at least 4.5 maybe 5.

Our first daughter went directly onto a bicycle with training wheels, as she never mastered a trike. She was about 2 when she went with the training wheels and obviously it was the smallest bike size. At 3 she told us that a blue van kept driving by our house calling her a baby and she wanted those extra wheels off, NOW! Off they came and never went back on. With spring in the air, we are off to start looking at those itty bitty bikes with training wheels for Izabella, soon to be 3. She had no interest last year as she loved what the kids call our camper, the unit that tows behind my bike. Good luck and HAVE FUN

Riding a bike
All my kids were pretty coordinated (from what I could tell
) and learned to pedal between 2.5 and 3. Could you get him a bike without pedals that he just has to push with his feet. Or let him try one with pedals in the store and see if he can use it without pedaling without getting too frustrated. My kids would band up their little shins if they tried to ride it too soon.Just my .02 Martha |

My older son was 2.5, almost 3 when he mastered peddling. Daniel still didn't "get it" last summer when he had just turned two, and since it is cold here, we haven't had an opportunity to try again in quite a few months.

Kiran started peddling around his second birthday. He has both a trike and regular bike with training wheels and rides them both. He couldn't really reach the peddles of his bicycle until recently. He is 2.5y.

My daughter got a trike at 2 yo. It was a model that had a handle so i could push it and she could either put her feet on the pedals and learn the motion or rest them on pegs. She started pedalling like 2 or 3 rotations at about 26/27 months and became a speed demon at 2.5.

It really depends on the child. My middle child could pedal a bike (and rode a tiny little 4 wheeler) when she was 2. She didn't learn to ride a 2 wheeler until she was nearly 7. My youngest child couldn't pedal on her own until well into the 3rd year, but rode a 2 wheeler at 5.

Our first daughter didn't even consider the trike till she was 3. Kimberly, age 3 and home 2 months, has learned to ride the bike with training wheels - she has no interest in the trike.
I will say that I have a neighbor whose daughter is 2 years, 4 months and rides a small bike with training wheels.

My older three all learned to peddle a tricycle sometime between 18mos and 2.5 years old. I read once somewhere (can't remember where) that the ability to peddle is one sign of readiness to potty train...not sure why or how or if that's accurate, but thought it was interesting.
Londy gets the idea but doesn't peddle completely independently and she is 25 months old. Jeremy just sits with his feet on the peddles at 24 months old. Kim

They say to pedal is more like 3 year old and above..Ana is 2.5 and I have seen her pedal a couple of times..a trike/big wheel kind of thing..
Interesting Kim..she went for months on the potty then stopped..now she is pedaling the trike and still no interest in the potty..hmm...!
