fevers

Resa,

We have been dealing with those HIGH HIGH fevers, too. Addison has snuck up to 105 in a short time, like 30 minutes napping...woke up screaming, it was so scary! Well, I'm almost used to it now, as now I know how to treat it, etc....

I always put her right in the bath....TEPID water...not hot, not cold. As said, if it's too cool, her body will shiver and try to raise its temp naturally, which is not what you want. Addison loves her bath, but at 105, she gets in there and HATES it....screaming all the way. Then the Motrin/Tylenol piggbacking routine....Whew....

What we found with her, was that (one of the times) she had a urinary tract infection. No other symptoms. It's so freaky when they are so playful and don't give out the right signals.

However, anything above 105 when you cannot get the temp down within the hour, I would go right to the ER, immediately...

just my two cents...I sure hope she is feeling better by this time....

Hugs!

Jen
and Addison, another high-temp girl....

Resa,

I know you saw my post about recent high fevers with Josie. It lasted a week for her. She too had experienced the high fevers in the past, but this was the first time that it kept going over 105, and she also doesn't act very sick. I didn't take her to the ER, but I would have if she was acting lethargic or if it didn't start moving down for me in the bath. (It took 10 minutes to move down at all, but moved steadily over 40 minutes)

Like everyone else has said, go with your gut, and don't worry about whether it is another virus or not. If you don't feel comfortable, take her to the ER. The first few times Josie had high fever, they were just viruses. This last time, I almost didn't take her in to the doctor, but something told me to take her. It ended up being bacterial tonsillitis. She appeared to me to have no other symptoms, but her tonsils were covered with pus pockets.

I'm sure she will be fine, but I'll pray for her too!

Keep us posted!

Sheila

We had the same problem with my oldest son. If he had a fever it would always spike very high, our doctor gave us some prescription Motrin to keep on hand and as far as the bloody nose use a humidifier as has already been mentioned. Just last week we went to the doctor for the bloody nose, my son will wake up with blood on his face and if he ever gets hit just a little in the nose he will bleed like a horror movie. Our doctor also said to put a little vasaline in his nose to help with the dryness, we keep the humidifier going every night. If you don't have a humidifier I was at the store with the big red bullseye the other day and they had some really cute ones shaped like animals.
Hope all is well soon,
Tina

I just wanted to thank all of you for the prayers, the encouragement both here and in PM's. We have such a wonderful group here.

It took us about four hours to bring Dylan's fever back to normal. It never rose again... not even one degree. In the past, when we've had these episodes, it was up and down. We stayed near her all day and she played and danced and sang and you would never know anything was wrong. Please pray it doesn't come back. No matter how much I trust my instinct, nothing will stop my heart like one of my babies hurting or being in danger.

Thank you all so much. (((((((hugs to all))))))))))

I am so glad to hear she is doing so much better! You have my prayers that this is over and will not reoccur. It is just so hard when your baby is sick.

I am just in tears. It is back. As soon as I finished making that post, she started crying. She got up to 104... she is laying asleep by me right now. I called her doctor and they told me it probably is a virus as it has been in the past. They told me to keep up the routine I am doing and watch her.

I could just cry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love my baby girl more than anything and I just can't bear her going through this. <thanks for letting me cry>

uti?

Has she had a urine culture? My 2 yo spiked 105 degree fevers for a week b4 the doc determined it was a urinary tract infection that had spread to her kidney. They ended up having to cath her to get a clean catch sample. I was freaked b/c if they don't catch it early enough it can lead to permanent kidney damage. It's worth asking your ped about....good luck...

Resa,

I just wanted to say that I am so sorry Dylan is sick. It is the worst thing for our little ones to be sick. ~hugs~

Our middle guy went through a year (+) bout of fevers. It seemed like he was ALWAYS sick. So I started keeping track on the calendar of when he was getting fevers, how long they lasted and how high they got. He runs a low temperature normally...in the low 97s and his fevers would usually get up to about 103 and they would last about 3 or 4 days and then return 6 weeks later. I would think about taking him in to the doctor and then he'd get better and then sick again..ugg!

Finally I'd had enough, brought him to the doctor the first day the fever hit. They did all kinds of tests found nothing and sent me home. The next episode I brought him in again on the first day. This time the doc did some other blood test and it came up that he had something she called Marshall's syndrome. Which basically is reoccuring fevers that there isn't much to do about and eventually kids grow out of! So we quit worrying about the fevers.

Then about 6 months later he got strep which I took him in for and he received two bouts of antibiotics for because the first didn't kick it. Ever since the second, stronger antibiotic his reoccuring fevers are gone. So in the end I'm not convinced he had this "Marshall's syndrome". Maybe he had some kind of infection somewhere that his body couldn't get rid of on it's own...I'll never know. But it is a pretty amazing coincidence.

Just keep an eye on her and keep a record of these fevers and if they keep coming back, insist that they look beyond the "just a virus" explanation. Remember that YOU know your child best and no medical degree qualifies someone to tell you your little one is fine when you know they aren't.

Keep your chin up! Hope she's better soon!!

Kim

Resa,

I just wanted to let you know that I am saying a prayer for you and Dylan. I hope that you can get things cleared up really soon. Sydney did the same thing for a couple of weeks when she had her spell. I still think it was a combo of a virus and teeth. Is she teething right now? Lots of Love.

statefan

Keep us posted.

Hi everyone... just wanted to post an update. It is still not over. Her fever only got to 100 today, but she threw up. I did take her to the doctor and they have run every test they can, including urine tests, etc. She has an unnamed virus and she is teething. She does have wax build-up in her ears and the debrox is not helping. The doctor cleaned them out some and we have an appointment with an ENT for both my girls next week.

She is my little trooper... this is a kid who throws up and plays in it. This is a kid who runs a 104 fever and tells Mommy she loves her in the middle of it. This is a kid that dances when in between her doses of medicine.

We're hanging in there. I am going to name the unnamed virus the "Dylan" virus. My sweetie pie is sleeping peacefully right now.

Thank you so much for the PM's, the prayers and the inquiries. It is so good to have such a wonderful support group.

I'm so sorry you're all going through this. Guapo hasn't had his first illness with me yet, and I'm so frightened of it. It kills me just to see him bite done on something during teething and wince. Hang in there and let us know what happens. Both your girls are so precious.
