I second the info from Dave Thomas Foundation. It is wonderful. I ordered it also with all thoughts thatI was about to encounter a battle. Our handbook never even mentioned adoption and when I asked about leave (before we even started our hs), I was told that they had never faced a situation like it before and they weren't sure how to handle it. Anyway, I ordered the packet from Dave Thomas ready for a battle. I never had to use it. A week after I asked them about leave, the partners came to me and apologized for not having any answers to begin with. The handbook was rewritten to include leave due to adoptions and everything now says Maternity/Adoption Leave. I was entitled to full "Maternity Leave". In the end I took a Leave of Absence and I now stay at home and due contract work for the same company.

My company offers very generous maternity leave (10 weeks paid) but there have been 5 pregnancies this year and they are freaking out a little. They are considering short term disability to cover 60% (with the firm making up the difference) which will not cover adoption. My boss did say that they would still give me the 10 weeks off but it isn't in writing. One of the partners in the firm is an adoptive parent and has asked me several times how things are going with my adoption so I am hoping I will be ok.
