Social Security Card

Hi

For those of you that have requested a social security card for your baby, how long did it take for you to receive it.

Also did any of you file a form with the IRS to get an Taxpayer Identification Number for Pending U.S. Adoptions.

I called the IRS and they said fill this out if the child is a US citizen.

Thanks for your help.

It took us around a week and a half to get ours. I think that the IRS only wants you to fill that out if you havent readopted and done (name change) and didnt want to have to get two social security cards (one with Guatemala name, one with new american name). Did that make sense?

just to add: You can get the social security number in the guatemalan name and then change it later to the american name. If you came home on an IR3 (already have COC) if not I am not sure what other documentation the social security department takes. We showed them the COC and the adoption decree.
Hope this helps

We had our kids' social security numbers in just a couple weeks also. They looked at the final decree, their passports, and their Guatemalan birth certificates.

I got their numbers right away for insurance purposes, then went back and had their status changed when their CofC's came and their names changed when we completed that process. Because Lauren came home in Nov. and the name change couldn't be completed before our taxes were filed, her name on our taxes for last year just shows as her birth name. When you change their name on their card, it is the same number, just a name change, like you would do when you get married. We did have to turn in the origional cards (with their birth names) at the time we applied for the cards in their new names.

Hope that makes sense!

That helps me too!

DH and I planned on going to a local SSN office this week to get this done since he is taking the day off..but if it is a quick turn around to mail it in, we may just mail it to save the trip!

We are also an IR3 and wanted to get the SSN in now (for tax purposes) and update our son's status and name as that happens when we receive the COC and then again when we readopt.

Just to clarify - I did go into the Social Security office to apply, but they mail the card to you. You don't get it that day.

I suggest going into your local office. Ours wanted to see the originals, and I dont know if mailing them is such a good idea. (came from a long line of postal workers in my family LOL) The SS office would have to send them back (doubt if you would ever see them again) If I were you I would go into the office. It is safer and you get to walk out with your paperwork in hand and then they mail you the ss card.

Hi Kim,

I went the Friday we got back and they made copies of some of our documents and are sending them out to be translated (although the English version was there too). I called them today (BIG MISTAKE) and they told me they have no idea what the status is or where it is in the process and it could take months. Very frustrating.
