When something like this happens, I'm sure it affects the people in process with the agency at the time, and it's horrible. I'm praying for you all. Question, though: what about completed adoptions? What if further investigation discovers some sort of habitual wrong-doing or illegalities. Are the completed adoptions in jeopardy?

All Things Considered, January 8, 2006 · A growing demand for adoptable children overseas is leading to tragic outcomes for some children and parents. Michael Montgomery of American RadioWorks reports on problems with adoptions of children from the former Soviet Union.

Holy Smokes. I just finished listening to the story and I am blown away that things were allowed to go this far without police intervention. Now the FBI has 40 individual cases againts the agency mentioned in this program and in the news articles posted earlier in the week. Although ATC sampled the Russian program many of the points raised can be applied to all IA programs, such as the dangers of photlistings, bait and switch and researching country adoption laws rather than relying on an agency to tell you everything you NEED to know. Sadly, agencies don't always take responsiblity to inform families while others require fams to take classes before they approve their app.

My thoughts are everywhere. Talk about food for thought!

You can hear the entire report at NPR.org. (All Things Considered - "Scams Plague Efforts To Adopt Beyond Borders). It lasts about 16 1/2 minutes. It it mostly talking all about adoptions from Russia!

Didn't it just make your heart sink, listening to it? It was like a laundy list of int'l adoptive parents' worst nightmares come true!!
