Anyone know of any organizations to make donations to for Guatemala?

My kids each get an envelope on the tree on Christmas morning donating something in their name. For my daughter, we are going to do the stove project and I don't know what to do for my son. I remembered reading on guatadopt a blanket drive, but can't find any information on it. I would like it to be for something specific so they can truly understand their gift. Any suggestions? We chose Guatemala this year because it has obviously become very special to us. Any help would be appreciated!! Blessings, Ali

worldvision has a gift catalog, you can donate an animal for a family or specifically to the latin american fund. The donation comes with a very cute card. We always do rabbits or chickens for our nephews. They get a kick out of the farm animals and understand the donation a bit better.

Ali, that is a terrific idea for your children. It teachs them the joy of giving from a very young age. I have heard great things about Hands Of Hope charity in Guatemala. If you do a google search you can read all about this clinic that a husband and wife team opened for the people of Guatemala so that they may have basic medical care. Good luck and have a great holiday.

Go to www.projecthappiness.org. This is the blanket project. Greg and Anita with Hands of Hope (the above poster described them) runs a medical clinic and has helped to put together Project Happiness. Their website is www.hands-of-hope.com and you can also read about their work.

I hope all of this helps...and thanks for also doing the stove project!

You can donate to Children's International and tell them it is specifically for Guatemala.

Heifer International does work in Guatemala (and Central America more broadly) -- it's really concrete because your donation is translated into how many goats, chickens, etc. it buys.

Fotokids is a great project that's working with children who live at the Guatemala City dump and in some of the areas that were most affected by the civil war. They train kids in photography, distribute their photos, and use the proceeds to provide scholarships for the kids to stay in school.

Three are SO many NGOs working in Guatemala that if you do a Google search I'm sure you'll find something age appropriate.

Thank you all so much for your help!! We decided to do the stove project for my 7 year old and the blanket project for my 3 year old. I think the blankets are something he will really understand because he always has a blanket around him. I appreciate you all taking the time to help me out and I wish you all a wonderful Christmas season with your families!! Blessings, Ali

Another really great org, if you are looking for one, is Mayan Families. They are based out of the Panajachel area around Lake Atitlan. Welcome to MAYAN FAMILIES
