Pediatrician Update on Baby Madi
Good evening everyone.. I was wondering if anyone might know anything about a statement that the Doctor made on my Pediatrician update today. The statement said: Finding a Nevus Sebaceus of Jadassohn in the scalp.
What does that mean? Should I be worried...? OY!! I guess I have a lot of research to do but I thought maybe someone might have some information as to what they are talking about...?? Okay.. I'm not going to stress, yes I am, no I'm not... Yes, I am!! I wish I had her home so I understood what it is that my baby has on her scalp that the Doctor thinks I need to worry about. HELP!

Pediatrician here.
Nevus sebaceous are barely noticeable plaques in the skin, making the patch of skin look like orange peel skin, usually of the head. They are not uncommon. I have seen quite a few of them in the scalp causing a small bald spot under the hairline of completely normal children. It is standard practice to recommend complete removal before the age of puberty, first of all because adolescent hormones cause them to grow and become unsightly and also because they have the potential to grow into cancerous skin lesions. Anytime before the age of 8 or 9 years is good for removal. The nevus itself is "no big deal". I tell the parents not to worry about it. If your child has completely normal neurological and developmental milestones I would not worry about it. Nevus sebaceous are sometimes found in children who also have seizures or mental retardation. Most of the nevus I have heard about in this regard are fairly large and on the forehead or midface. There is no good data about the correlation between this. None of the children I have seen have had seizures or mental retardation, they have all been completely normal. If I was accepting a referral of a child with a nevus sebaceous on the face who was in another country I would probably request a developmental/neurological evaluation just to reassure myself there was no evidence of trouble. Hello. Bazorlando are you from Orlando? I am in Casselberry FL and have a local Pediatrician that has looked over my sons medical reports for me. Let me know if you are from Orlando and would like her name.
