Help With Ear Wax Removal?

Hi everyone,
My nephew, who is a preschooler, started taking swimming lessons. It seems now that his right ear is blocked, and he can't hear out of it.
My sister gently cleaned his ear with a qtip and a lot of brown wax came out. She stopped though because she did not want to plug any wax further in his ear.
It is not hurting him, it is just blocked. She called the doctor and he told her first to try de-block drops?
Has anyone used anything like this or better-and did it work?
Thanks

Our pediatrician says at every single visit that we shouldn't put anything in their ear smaller than their elbow. In other words, never put anything in their ear. In other words, never use q-tips ever.

Now, that prevents future blockages. My nephew had the same problem, and had his ear flushed. That can either be done at home, or at the dr. office. It can either be done using that chemical ear wax dissolver, or just flushing water. When he was done, he was really dizzy and almost tipped over though, so be careful.

Good luck!

Since all OTC ear wax removers contain mostly hydrogen peroxide, she can use a few drops of peroxide in his ear. It will bubble and tickle a bit, but it does work. I have used it several times myself. Good Luck!

Did he give her the name of a specific product? I know there are some out there but I can't remember their names, and I didn't realize you could use them on young children. I found this online....she could always try it and see if it helps. Good luck!

Most cases of ear wax blockage can be treated at home. Mineral oil, baby oil, glycerin, or commercial drops can be used to soften wax in the ear. Detergent drops such as hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide may aid in the removal of wax.

I've gently used that nasal "snuffer outer" that you sometimes use to "suck the snot" out of a baby's nose. Warm water gently squeezed in, as the child leans over the sink...flushed ear down. Sorry for the descriptive phrases. Amazing what comes washing out...

My sister in law's pediatrician suggests a couple of drops of castor oil (can buy in natural food store) in each ear once a week. It has worked well for her waxy son.
Good luck,
Ursula

Hi..only one more suggestion...when flushing the ear, make sure the liquid is tepid or warm. If the temperature is cold or too cool it causes nausea/dizziness.

My son's ear produces more wax than needed, so he is currently on "Debrox"...dewaxing drops. I put them in 2x a day and the wax slowly comes out on it's own. Our ped. said never put a Qtip in to try to get it out...it just pushes the wax down further. Debrox is available at any pharmacy without prescription. My son is 3 and I put about 2 drops in twice a day, then put 1/2 a cotton ball in for an hour or so, so that the drops don't come out. So far it seems to be working. My son was complaining his ear hurt so I thought it was an infection, and here it is too much ear wax! Also...when you "squeeze" the drops in, don't put the dropper into the ear canal...leave it just on the outside and let it drip in. Hope that helps!

good suggestions to deal with the ear wax.

also might want to think about potential "swimmers ear". (not only caused by swimming) i was a swimmer and had constant problems with my ears and water in them, this can cause an infection and it can become very painful if left untreated. a couple of drops of rubbing alcohol or distilled white vinegar will do the trick, it just causes the water to evaporate.

as always, consult your physician if you have a punctured eardrum or had ear surgery-tubes inserted.
