A Tragedy (Milwaukee, 8/30/05)
I tried to post the article but had trouble so here is the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel link instead.
http://www.jsonline.com/news/metro/aug05/352158.asp A two-year-old girl, Martha, was orphaned in Guatemala and adopted last year by a Pennsylvania couple. They disrupted the adoption and Martha was placed with a Milwaukee couple. Martha is now hospitalized with multiple injuries, severe deprivation, and possibly lasting brain damage. I can't even form the words to comment...

Elizabeth,
Thank you for posting this news story…it so sad…these kids experience so much loss, and for this girl to come here and lose so much more is just devastating. Anytime I hear about a disrupted adoption, I wonder where the system failed these kids and what else can be done to protect the ones who will likely come after them. I will keep her in my thoughts.

Three families? Three opportunities to be cared for and loved and she's in a HOSPITAL with severe injuries?

You know, it's one thing to disrupt an adoption but to take a child from their birthland and culture and then disrupt the adoption is, in my mind, criminal. I obviously think that international adoption is fine, *if* the adoptive parents are educated and prepared to commit their lives to an adopted child. I fault an irresponsible agency as much as the adoptive parents in this case and a few others.
In reference to the domestic foster family I sincerely hope that, if guilty, they are prosecuted and sent to prison. With everything I had to go through to get approval to adopt I just don't understand how sickos like this can be missed. I just don't understand! I hope an established adoptive family of a spanish or mayan child steps up and embraces her. My husband is going to have a cow but I'm going to contact the state and see if there is anything I can do for that sweet little girl. Oh I'm so upset and angry that I'm just rambling I'm sure,......

This makes me even sicker, as I'm blocks away from the hospital she's in and live in the same town as these people. Good grief, isn't there enough tragedy in the world?

Prayers for Martha!
So very sad for a little girl looking for love and kindness. I wish that this could have turned out differently. I will pray for little Martha.

It is stories like this
that leave me speechless. But it is unfortunately stories like this that makes me understand the legal process we have all gone through. It is for the children's protection, and for that I am truly grateful. Obviously the system failed in this case.
Horrifying for any child to face. Wow, very sad and heartbreaking makes me reflect on the reason we have all chosen adoption.
