OT: Second, third, and fourth jobs to help with adoption fees

I know we've discussed affording adoption at length, but as I contemplate a third job (network marketing--ack!) to get those credit cards paid off (just in case Maria wants a little sister ), I was wondering what jobs folks have taken to help with adoption expenses.

Anybody care to share?

Valerie

I work for myself, so I've just been pushing to get more jobs (architectural photography). Our main savior was refinancing our home - we were able to get the bulk of the money there. It's making our payments a little higher but it seems much more managable.

When we were choosing a country to adopt from, the only "con" on the Guatemala list was the cost. The young age, the healthy babies....that all makes it worthwhile. Just keep in the back of your mind that every time Maria smiles at you, it pays for the extra hours you put in that day.

Hey, I love the picture! I haven't taken a third job, but as a nurse, I did pick up a part time job, but with all the extra shifts that I've been working at my #1 job, I haven't been able to do the other. So... anyhow, to raise some extra money, we sold bar-b-que sandwich plates for $5/plate; included chopped bar-b-que beef, bag of chips, a pickle and a packaged dessert! Went over real big! I only sold to people here at the hospital (small community Hospital) and the surrounding doctor's offices and made over $600. That was only myself selling tickets. I made up tickets with Reina's picture on them and they were also used as a thank-you note; went along the lines of: "Thank you for purchasing this Sandwich plate. 100% of your $5 purchase goes toward adoption expenses..." Something to that effect. The picture works wonders. You can do a lot this way, especially if you have someone to help you sell tickets, make plates and deliver. Your local hospital is a great place to go,espcially the night shift. Good luck!

Just wanted to say that is such a cute idea! I used to be a night shift nurse and believe me, I would have paid more than $5 for a good meal for once.

Valerie, as another single mom, it was hard to get the $ for #2. I am also a nurse (nice to see so many here!) so I worked extra shifts, cut back on everything I could (For example, I changed internet providers, phone services, cell phone) I have the same ecconomical car, stoped buying expensive make up and took out a home equity line of credit (which I am still and most likely be paying back for 5 years) Some days its tough because I have a pretty tight budget but there are many things you can do for free with the kids. It is hard when they are little and there are so many extras you need re formula, diapers ect.. The day care is also pretty expensive but my day care provider gives me a discount for two kids so even if I work an extra shift I still come out ahead about 350.00.
I am still working about 3 extra shifts a month to help provide some "extras".
Don't wait too long in case Guatemala changes its mind about singles.
Mary
