There is an outdoor mall type place within walking distance of the Marriott. The staff can tell you where it is. There is a kiosk in there that sells Telefonicas.

Also, the small artist market that is next to McDonald's by the Marriott has a Telefonica store. I can't remember if they sell phones, but we bought a minutes card there to replenish ours. They have to sell phones...

i was pretty sure i saw some phones being sold at a booth there near the usairways booth.

I heard the Westin Business Center has ones you can rent if you're staying there and they come with minutes and you can buy more. I am not completely sure about this though.

yes...i am getting mine at the westin business center! Also, you can call nextel and order one that you can pick up at the nextel store in the us. see ya there!!!!!!!!!!!

Can you use ones from the US in guate? I am just wondering cause I have seen this topic a couple times and it just occured to me maybe now.

I'm sure that with some U.S. carriers you can, call them. I called my carrier and was told that "they" didn't have international calling services.

Cingular and T-Mobile will work in Central America, you just have to call them to get international roaming activated. I think Cingular runs about $2 a minute in Guatemala. I believe Sprint will also work in analog mode if you get it activated for international roaming.

We just rented one from the Westin. Cheaper and no hassle.

How much are the rentals at the Westin?

Westin - $5 per day + minutes. I'm drawing a complete blank on the per minute charge, but it was FAR lower than our Cingular service.

I'm fairly certain Nextel works in Guate, but ou are again looking at around $2.00 per minute.

We have nextel, and we checked and Nextel doesn't offer service down in Guat. So what we did is change servers for cell phones. TMobile works down in Guat and comes through great. There is no extra charge for international calling except t does cost 2 dollars a minute.

if you are staying for just a few days then go get the westin phone for 5$ a day. but if you are fostering, as I did, then go buy on in the market, the westiin sells the cards to recharge them I paid 100q or about $12 and got about 30 min.
