This morning at 9:30 we lost one of our horses -- the one I was hoping would be our son-to-be's favorite. But after 6 years of battle against arthritis, joint diseases, and other ailments, we had to say goodbye to Maverick -- the mighty horse -- who had just turned 20 this spring.

We had him buried in the mountains, literally "where the buffalo roam" (there is a herd of buffalo on that pasture)... What a perfect resting place for a retired cowhorse with a gentle soul. We'll miss our big boy... Tonight the barn is just too quiet.

Thanks guys for letting me post this -- it's been a VERY, VERY tough day.

So sorry to hear of your loss. We are animals lovers too and have experienced losing some of our 4 legged friends over the years. I know how you must be feeling. I know it doesn't make it any easier but he is at rest now. I will say a prayer for your family.

Maverick was a beautiful horse! I'm so sorry that you lost him today. I had two horses and two ponies growing up, and I remember when one of my ponies "Little Black" died. I had him since I was two years old and he died when I was about 14. I'm not sure who cried more.. me or my daddy. He was part of the family, as I'm sure Maverick was to yours. I'm so sorry for your loss.

Awww, this is very sad! I've always had a love for horses, from a distance...when I was a child I was thrown and always was a bit intimidated by them...but such gorgeous, majestic creatures....

Horses are such beautiful souls especially yours. Your attachment is so strong and the pain is so deep. Take time for yourself and deal with your grief. Some people don't understand the connections we have with animals, you will always love this horse and feel the loss. You will tell your little boy all him and what a good horse he was.

I am sorry for your loss. I don't know how they do it, but animals have a way of getting into the deepest parts of our hearts. It is so hard to loose them after loving them for so long.

Thank you all for your kind words... It's amazing how much room he took in our hearts... I can still feel his warm cheek against mine, hear his soft nicker at meal times, see his regal expression when he would see a deer in the distance. We will miss him forever.
