We have been home for a little over a week now. I received a packet fed-ex from our agency. Alot of this is in spanish. What is this? Can someone please help me.

Also, do we have to do something to get documents back that were in the envelopes?

Also, what about the birth certificate and also can't I get the original copy of the picture of her with her birthmom?

They sent it via email and it didn't come through clearly.

I know you all thought that she was home I wouldn't ask questions anymore...sorry!

Beth, my guess is that the packet contains a copy of the Guatemalan court documents . . . unless you received these while in Guatemala. (Our agency had them translated to English before giving them to us . . . are you sure that there is not an English translation attached to each document?) You will need these to readopt, to get a US passport, etc. etc.

You should have received a copy of baby's new birth certificate. It doesn't look like a US one, but it should have your names and the baby's name with your surname. "Certificacion de Nacimiento" is in big letters partway down the page.

If you want to post the titles of the documents in Spanish, I'd be happy to compare them to my own and let you know roughly what you're looking at (I speak some Spanish). Or perhaps someone else can chime in, too.

I think the DNA birthmother photo that you're talking about is on file with the USCIS until you request return of those documents. I haven't done that yet, so I can't help there!

Thanks for your response. Yes I believe it is the birth certificate and yes they are all in spanish. Do, I have to have them translated before we readopt?

What about her social security #?

Also, our insurance is asking for an adoption decree. Could we send them copies of this stuff?

The insurance company "might" accept the Guatemalan decree. The passport office WILL require it, as will the court when you readopt. The social security office just looked at our US adoption decree (it contained the baby's name change). However, when we adopted our daughter, we just presented the foreign adoption decree to the social security office and they accepted that.

Unfortunately, you will almost certainly need to have the documents translated into English. Your best bet is to get an official "certified" translation, but I don't know where or how you can do that. (Can someone suggest an answer to this?) Perhaps your attorney will accept just a regular translation? Do you have an attorney handling the readoption?

And you may find out some interesting details about your case when you do get that translation done . . . our packet included the socioeconomic study that referred to the social worker's interview with the birth mom. We learned some helpful things about her history.

I am sorry that your agency didn't just do that for you automatically . . . but hang in there! You are almost done with all this paperwork!
