Look on the left hand under Organizations, Lists Ect section and there is a great how to get on the big list. Very easy and just for ease I have cut and pasted the info here :-

Directions for joining the St. John’s List-serve (The Big List)


It is very simple...be sure you do two things:
1. If your emails normally have a 'signature' at the bottom...take that off.
2. Send an email to the following address:

listserv@maelstrom.stjohns.edu

Put in whatever subject line you want, it doesn't matter

In the body of the email type just one single line:

subscribe guatemala-adopt jane doe

(please substitute your first name and last name in place of Jane Doe)

Hit send and that is it. You should be approved within a day and you will start to receive a LOT of emails from this list. Up to 50 + per day sometimes.

Maybe this is a stupid question...but what does the list provide for you? Why would you receive so many emails a day??

Be sure to turn on the digest mode so you receive emails only a couple of times a day. I think I got 3 or 4 digest mails today. That probably was 50-60 posts boiled down to just 3-4.

once i got on, i couldnt get OFF this list.

finally, somehow, poof, i was off...

go figure?!

the "major" news is usually xposted here anyhow,
the rest is a lot of people stating there opinions etc on such topics as "is it right to choose the sex you adopt" and others.
these are cool topics and it's fun to read and participate when you choose,
but,
it's a LOT of emails.

especially if your a little computer challenged like myself and could not figure out how to change into "digest" mode.

i hope this was okay to post.
i like the big list and found it informative,
i just wanted to throw out the other not so great part of that list.

cris...who now feels a little bad, but still feels this is a valid observation that was a negative challenge.

I'm getting too many emails! What can I do?

You can set your subscription to "digest" mode where you get one long message every day with all of that day's list messages embedded in it, instead of receiving all messages individually in your email.
To do so, send this command to the list server at listserv@maelstrom.stjohns.edu:


set guatemala-adopt digest
Digests are normally sent out by the server once per day, a little after midnight eastern US time. If there are a lot of messages in a day, an interim digest may be sent mid-day as well.
