adoption without and agency
has anyone gone directly to an attorney and skipped the agency? Would you recomend doing this?

It is not legal in some states, so check your laws before you spend too much time researching this aspect.
Even if you could proceed, legally, I would not advise cutting out an agency. They provide a wealth of protection. I have adopted internationally, know enough to bypass the services of an agency but no way in the world would I do it! My state (KY), thank goodness, requires families to utilize an adoption agency. Before I discovered this state law I was talking to one of the worst facilitators out there who has a history of embezzling money and her timelines usually exceed two years! Ooooohhh she was a sweetheart on the phone and I was falling for *it*. If you have specific questions I would be happy to answer.
