Anyone else have baby who doesn't let them use the computer?

Ever since he started crawling (he's now walking), Luca has hated it when I/we sit down on my chair in front of the computer. Even if I'm looking right at him and talking to him, making goofy faces, etc. while I sit, he still starts wailing and walks over to me, wraps himself around my legs, looks up at me and sobs - literally uncontrolably (same thing happens with DH). As soon as I/we pick him up and plop him on my lap, he's fine (even though he's mostly bored watching me on the computer). Once in a while he is OK with my sitting down initially (if he's preoccupied with tormenting poor kittie, for instance), but he will soon leave his kittie-chasing post to come over sobbing and the whole saga begins.
We've tried lots of things, including the 'ol, "you're fine baby, it's OK...yadayada" and letting him cry a little bit, but we simply can't concentrate, so we end up having to pick him up.
Is this a Luca thing, or has anyone else had this issue? Thanks in advance!

Maggie

My 14-month old won't let me use the computer either, BUT, it's because SHE wants to use it. She will NOT leave the keyboard alone. I have to put the keyboard on top of the machine and do everything with the mouse. That's okay for reading the forum, but doesn't work well for posting. <grin>

Good Luck,
Jennifer

Oh yeah... I'm on the third child that is allergic to the computer when mama is using it and also develops floor and lap allergies when I'm sitting down.

My 15 month old son always wants to type when I'm on the laptop! I'm going to get him a baby computer of his own for Christmas.

Mary Lynn is always grabbing my "mouse hand" so that I can't navigate! She does like the computer if she can sit on my lap and look at pictures of herself!

Yep

And it doesn't get any better. My FOUR year old constantly wants me to get off so he can check his "email."
Sigh.

Oh yeah . . .

sounds familiar! However, with Maria Cristina it is not just the computer, but rather anything that takes my attention away from her. And like you described with Luca, she can be busily occupied and having a blast with something, but the MOMENT she realizes she is not getting my undivided attention she wails . . . and it is as pitiful as it is annoying. Like you described, she becomes immediately fine if I pick her up and plop her in my lap. Well, so much for typing an email! Is Luca only this way with the computer, or does he want your undivided attention in other arenas too? Good luck. (I was hoping Maria would outgrow this especially after she became mobile . . . so, your email is upsetting since perhaps she won't outgrow it so soon. ACK!)

Whew!..I mean,..sorry you guys

but I'm glad I am not alone in this.

Boni - sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Luca's even more of a crybaby now that he's walking, and his new thing is to try to climb himself onto my lap, whereas before it was just holding my leg and resting his sweat-soaked head on my lap. However it does depend on the situation. Sometimes he'll be happy as a clam (never understood that expression but I enjoy using it!), but that is mostly in situations where someone else is present in the room AND poor kittie is also there for distraction. <sigh> I just got The Discipline Book and did a quick look at the index, but didn't see anything there about this yet :-(

Well...at least we know their lungs and tear ducts are in healthy shape!

Thanks for your responses people...keep 'em coming if you get the chance!

Maggie

Not only...

Not only does she not like me on the computer--she found out at 11 months how to push buttons---and knows that the BIG BLUE butoon shuts down the computer---her expression is priceless when this happens---she knows she is in control!!!

Oh yes!! Definitely!!
Connor only like the computer when I can hold him & let HIM 'type' on the keyboard. Other than that, he refuses to share mama with anything, even a computer. He tugs at my shirt, tries to crawl up into my lap. We've tried it all. Even moved the pc fom my downstairs office (which was in ear/eyeshot to his adjacent playroom) to the upstairs, in the kitchen nook, thinking it would put him more at ease since we spend most of our time up here. But NO....I finally just wait until he's asleep for the night. And I'm trying to finish school ONLINE--so this seriously cuts into my "my pc" time. ugh!

Gabriella also loves to 'type' on the computer. For a while DH just set up a keyboard that wasn't hooked up to anything and she would sit in his lap and use her keyboard while he used his.

Unfortunately, that only worked for so long. I am slowly starting to teach her that if Mommy is typing or using the computer that she cannot touch the keyboard.

She also loves to 'check her email'. Bonus is that she can check her email on the computer, a calculator, digital alarm clock or anything that has buttons and a screen!

Dd is over 2 and I have not been able to do anything that's not directly about her since she came home at 11 mos..we're talking I can't even sweep my floor for 3 minutes after a meal...Thank goodness she's a good sleeper and I can count on her napping and going to bed early enough for me to get some things done! However, if your son's issue is more specific to computers, perhaps it would help if he had some sort of a toy computer that he could "work" on while you work on yours? We have a play Barney "computer" and when you press the keyboard it makes animal sounds, counts, etc.
