Eyelashes causing eye infection????

I am back from GC and our baby has a cough with sneezing and now I notice one eye is 'gooey'. I also noticed the bottom lashes of that eye always touch the eyeball. I do remember someone on this board having the same eye issue a few months ago....
Any tips on what to do????
I did take her to the Dr. yesterday.. and he said not to worry about the cough that her lungs were clear, but her cough sounds so 'chesty'...
UGH!!!!!
I will post all about my trip once I get settled...
thanks forum friends....

That condition is VERY common in children born in latin America...I don't think there is much you can do about it and I don't think it causes infections. You can talk to your doctor about it when you get home.

Our lil man's eyelashes touched his eye when we brought him home (here locally) also. I have taken him for check-ups with an eye doctor for it, and he said it is fairly common. L has pretty much grown out of it now (he is a year) and the doctor said the main concern would have been if it scratched the cornea. There is a simple surgery where they take away part of the eye lid to un-invert the lashes if it is necessary, but chances are the baby will outgrow it first.
As far as the cough goes..... both our boys had bad coughs and sinuses.... the dr recommended childrens pediacare (tylenol cold works great for those teething with a cold) to be given overnight if it is interrupting the baby's sleep. She said not to worry about medicating in the day (unless an antibiotic was needed).
And just a side note....be careful of the red colored cold meds!!! I never knew about this till I used dimatap on L, but apparently some red dyes can make kids hyper, and effects can worsen if you store the medication in a well lit area! Woulda been nice to hear about before we stayed up for 4 hours with our hyper baby.

Good luck and congrats!
Carrie :-)

PS- L's eye was always gooey while it they touched also, forgot to mention that before. Just use a warm damp washcloth, it comes off easy that way.

same here

our baby girls bottom eyelashes touch also and the doctor told us the same thing that she typically will outgrow it and if needed they can do a simple surgery. Our doctor also told us that he didn't think that it bothered the babies too much. Her eyes were always gooey, especially in the morning but for the last two months this hasn't been the case. Good luck with the cough/congestion and welcome home.
