Hi all,
Regarding the employment letters you take with you to the American Embassy in Guatemala when you pick up the child, do they have to be verified/authenticated? I know the employment letters for the dossier do, but I was just wondering if I should send the other two along to be verified and authenticated, too... Thank you! Kathleen aka Punkyboo

Hi Kathleen,
My agency told us that the employment letter must be dated within 30 days of the Embassy appointment. So I don't think you need to get an additional document certified, etc. because it will need to be updated anyway. To answer your question though, I am not sure if it needs to be notarized. I would like to know the answer to that myself. Stacie ![]()

If you go to the Embassy website and click on Adoptions (left side of the page) they have a ton of great information. This is what they have to say about the tax returns and employment letter, but it is well worth reading the whole thing. (I cut out a lot between "Documents you or the escort . . . ." and the B and C.)
Documents you or the escort must bring to the Adoption Immigrant Visa Interview : B) Copies of the last three years of federal tax returns as filed with the Internal Revenue Service, including , if applicable, W-2 forms, 1099 forms, and all IRS Schedules . The adopting parents do not need to separately attest to the accuracy of the federal income taxes, nor have the tax copies notarized; the Concluding Provisions of Part 7 of the Affidavit of Support contain a certification to this effect. C) In addition, the adopting parents must present proof of current employment in the form of a copy of a recent pay stub or a letter from the employer.

Certification and authentication are only for documents that go to the Guatemalan government (Family Court & PGN). Documents for the US government do not have to be certified and authenticated.

We just went to the Embassy
My husband switched companies in January so we had to do an addendum to our home study. We had an employment letter redone and notarized (only). It was dated in January and we went to the Embassy in APril. The guy at the window in the Embassy simply looked at it and went to the next document.

No it does not need to authenticated. It should be recent. We had ours notarized. It may be easier to just bring copies of your most recent paystubs instead of a letter (at least if your boss was as slow as mine in helping with these things).
