orphanage or foster care??
We are very interested in adopting and see a big difference in price depending on if it is foster care or from an orphanage. Could you please let me know your thoughts?
Thanks Robbieswife |

Robbieswife,
We adopted a baby that was in foster care and she was very well taken care of and treated like royalty. I have a close friend who has adopted 2 babies who were raised in an orphanage. They were also treated like royalty and taken very well care of. Foster care is one of the reasons we chose to adopt from Guatemala but with that being said if given the opportunity we wouldn't have a problem with adopting from an orphanage. Ami

I think that fostercare is better because the baby has less of a chance od having bonding issues with you later.

I think so much depends on the quality of the care, not necessarily on the type. In general they say foster care is better, but I think if the orphange is well run, well staffed and the children are active, not left in cribs for most of the day, an orphange is fine.
Our first daughter (home in 2001) at age 10 months was in a orphnage from birth and she is fine...no developmental delays or bonding issues. However, we knew people who had been to the orphange and seen it first hand so that helped. Our 2nd duaghter is currently in foster care which is OK, but I wonder if she will actually have a harder time adjusting to us, since she has bonded with ONE care giver???? |

I think there are pros and cons to both. We've heard that most of the foster mom's in Guatemala are really good. We visited our twins and found that they are so loved and really cherished. When we talked to people in Guatemala, it seemed that most people there really cherish their children, so if your option to adopt depends on the financial difference of orphanage v. foster care - then I'd say do some research, pray about it and go with your gut. We've found some really great orphanages during our adoption journey.
