Anyone tried to use frequent flier miles?

Have anyone tried to use frequent flier miles for their trip down to Guatemala? I have so many miles and am praying I will be able to use them. How far in advance do you know that you are going to travel? This is the part that I think will get me.

American Airlines miles

I called American Airlines a few month ago and asked them. You can use frequent Flyer miles up to 24 hours notice. There is a fee for doing last minute bookings. I don't remember exactly how much it was I am thinking i was about $75-$100. I would recommend calling the airline that you want to use the miles and ask them.

Hope this helps

Lisa

My husband and I used frequent flyer miles when we went to visit our children. We had to pay $100.00 per ticket because we booked within 14 days of departure. We hope to use them again when we go to pick up our children. The problem is the notice. If you book over 14 days in advance then you don't have to pay anything. That was for Delta.

We did!

We used our NW ff miles on Delta flights to Guat because Delta is a NW partner. We paid like $160 total. We booked within 2 weeks of departure for our visit trip. Good luck!

We had frequent flier miles from United, and they could be booked down to 24 hrs in advance...I think there was a $75 change fee if you had to change after reserving...

Good luck!

We used frequent flyer with American Airlines. I went round and round trying to figure out the 'cheapest' way possible to travel. I was going to leave early, my husband was to meet me and then the three of us home together with 1 lap ticket...it got messy and lots of transfer fees exposed when you break it down.

Turns out we used 12,500 miles each to fly home together, First Class seats! Change fee was $150 total. Well worth it considering we had a rambunctious toddler and extra attention from the airline staff. We never considered that we would have enough to fly first class the whole way, we wanted free tickets, but first class one-way is really not that much.

We used frequent flier miles with Delta to book FIVE business class tickets with only two or three days notice for our pick up trip. It can be done! Good luck,

We used Continental free tickets. One trick to know: free tickets may be unavailable at first, but as the travel date approaches, like if there are any unused seats maybe 1 week out, the airlines actually *loosen* restrictions on free seats! So it's almost easier to fly last minute on a free ticket if that is not a sold out route. With one week to go, we could have travelled for free on ANY flight we wanted because airlines would rather a seat be used - even if it's for a free ticket - than go empty. So if your flight has no availability, wait a while and try again.
