You can pay a little extra and have the passport expedited; I believe they say it then takes 4-6 weeks. However, we got ours in under three when we applied. It depends a lot of current volume, of course, but it might be worth a try.
Having your expired one doesn't put you ahead of anyone in line, but it will also not slow things down while they do whatever it is they need to do for lost or misplaced passports.

I'm pretty sure you can get an expedited passport by paying an extra fee in the timeframe you are looking at. I had considered paying the expedited fee, but decided not to. I still had my passport in about 2 weeks.

When my sister-in-law agreed to go with me for our daughter's pickup, recently, we had to get her passport expeditied - we got it in 2 hours, and she had never had a passport before. This was through the New Orleans passport office, and cost $145 plus the cost of the photos. Call the passport office that services your area and I'm sure they can tell you where to go to get your passport expedited.

We were going to expedite ours (had to have proof we had them for our homestudy) but the woman at the postoffice asked when we really needed them (about a month away) and told us not to bother. We had our passports in 2-3 weeks. Perhaps your processing branch can also give you some advice?

Like most people I was told 4-6 weeks and got mine in just under 3. If you are out of PGN I would say to pay for the expediting just so you don't have to wait for it while your baby is waiting for you, I know I'd be a mess knowing I could but couldn't pick him up.
Congratulations!

Heather, if you take your airline ticket with you to the passport office, you can get it in 48 hours.
Go get that baby!!!

I don't think it takes as long for a renewal as it does for a first issue, but we had one expedited and it took about a week, (not including weekend).
http://travel.state.gov/passport_services.html This web site has lots of information. Good luck and Congrats on being out of PGN! |
