facial hair & stats
Hi Everyone, I think this website is so helpful I have learned so much by being on it. I have a few questions. first is about timeline. Juliet was born 4/27/04 and I received the referral 5/3, my paper work was sent to Guat. 5/10, my agency said it will be at least a couple more weeks before they do the DNA testing. Does that seem right? Also does it go to FC after that and how long is it usually in FC? My next question is when she was born she weighed 6lbs 14oz, 19 inches long, head size 12.7 inches, 1 month later I got her stats she is now 9lbs 3oz 20.5 inches long and head 13.7 inches. Does this sound right she seems to have grown alot. Also her birth pictures she had such bushy eyebrows and alot of hair on her forehead, when I got the new pics the hair did not seem to leave that much. In both pics her eyes are closed, I asked my agency if I could get pics of her with her eyes open they told me I had to wait till her next exam. My sister made me a little paranoid since she works in paranatal, and with alot of Geneticists. She talked to one of them about the amount of facial hair they said it is probably normal for Guat. but it should be going away, they want to see a newborn pic and 1 month pic of her. I never even considered facial hair could be an underlying problem. Has anyone heard of this. By the way I come from a very white family, all the babies that have been born into my family have been bald and very light. So maybe my sister is being a little paranoid, anyways she has gotten me so worried. What does everyone think about this and her other stats. Thanks
Mary waiting for Juliet d.o.b. 4/27/04 |

Mary- Regarding the pictures with the eyes open. I was the same way. Sallie Dunn's eight week old pictures came and she had beautiful big brown eyes. She really doesn't have alot of facial hair so I can't answer that question.

Our son is 18 months old... he has facial hair and he had a real hairy forehead... He even has some hair on his back that is dark... and he is perfectly healthy it is normal for kids in Guatemala to have more hair than us northren european stock babies.

Three of my four had fine black hair from their eyebrows to their hair line. It did seem to be more in the newborn pix. The second set of pictures we got you could not see it as much. It is much less noticeable now, but they still have more hair all over their body than I do. Don't worry it grows on you
I wouldn't have it any other way....

My timeline is close to yours. Here is how things worked out for us (see timeline below) Our first pics baby had her eyes closed the second set we got later she had them open and we got a video. Does your agency do videos? You can really see the child so much better and get a much better feel for how they look etc. I loved my video!! My child has very little hair so can't answer that one!
My little on was 5#5oz at birth and at 2 weeks was 5# 10oz. I think your weight doesn't sound right?? Maybe double check that. Thats alot of weight to gain in 2 or 3 weeks for a baby??? ASK you agency for more details!!! And congratulations by the way!!! Have you posted a picture?? Good luck with your process, I hope it is smooth and quick, Brie

My daughter is 32 months old and when she was born had alot of hair on her face. When we picked her up at 8 months old she had lost alot of the hair on her face ....but... she has so much black hair on her back and her legs you could comb it. But she is very healthy. Most people who have dark hair when they are babys there peach fuz is dark/black.

WHen I saw my son's referral picture, he had TONS of hair and even down the forehead. A lot of babies have that. My son also has a sister who was adopted by a near by family and she also had tons of hair. No problem from the hair. I joke that Daniel could be a hair donor since he has so much hair. He had 4 haircuts by the time he was 1 years old. He also has what I call the "butt crack hair" Ha Ha, so does his sister. ALso very bushy eyebrows. Genetically I think more hair than folks of European desent.

Hi
About the weight gain,,it does seem like alot..but the first weight might have been in the hospital and the second weight at the pediatricians office...different scales etc...the important thing is the baby is gaining weight..and from the 2nd weight on..it should be the same scale so it will be more accurate..my son had alot of fine hair on his forehead..it did not go away...my daughter had some hair on her head as a newborn, then was pretty much bald, now is finally getting some nice hair in at 11 months..she has no visable hair on her forehead..Cathy

I think all is normal
The weight gain sounds fine to me. Both my bio's had similar weight gains in the first month (my first son was 6-7 at birth, over ten pounds at one month, and 11-10 at 2 mos). Babies can grow really fast the first few months!
Also, the hair you talk about is very common, especially in darker complexions. A lot of it can go away, but some can stay depending on genetics. Congrats on your referral! Jennifer |

Just another confirmation about the hair. My son had a lot of hair when he was born. Then at about three months it appeared as though much of it had fallen out, but it grew back in very thick and curly when he was about 5 months old. He is now 3 y/o and just went for a hair cut two days ago and the barber had to trim his sideburns! He has a very slight mustache, a slightly "furry" back, hair on his legs, and lots and lots and lots of hair on his head. It is so thick and lustrous and I wish it were mine!

Jeremy gained 3 lbs in 3 weeks during his second month. It surprised me too. They can grow so fast! In fact, I wondered if our second set of photos was even the same baby we'd seen just a couple of weeks earlier. He was only 5 pounds at birth though, so 3 pounds really changed how he looked.
He also had a ton of forehead hair and hair on his shoulders and back in his referral photos. I was assuming that since he was so small and with the hair, he might have been early. But as you can see lots of little Guatemalan babies have this hair. At 3.5 months he still has the forehead hair and his eyebrows still meet his hairline. The back and shoulder hair is thinner. Hope this information helps. It's tough when someone questions whether your little one is healthy or not, especially when they are in the medical field. But they are human too and just concerned for you and your baby. Just try to relax and trust that she is getting good care. It sounds like she's thriving. Kim

I teach high school where the population is 80% Hispanic. In general many girls still have more fine facial hair than caucasions at the same age. It is not unattractive, however. They are beautiful girls.
