Registering with embassy????

I think I read somewhere that you should register with the US embassy when you go to Guatemala. Can someone tell me how to do that. Thanks!

It's a good idea to do this

Go to this thread. I also bumped it as a help for others going. It takes just a few minutes to register.

Why bother? They can’t even move along “random investigations” what makes you think they are going to contact you if something goes wrong in country?

Entitled to your opinion

But at minimum, I would email a copy of your passport. That way, if you lose your original, there is someone to go to with a copy.

Hi,
The reason to register with the Embassy is so they know you are in the country, its for safety reasons, not so they will contact you about the adoption...Cathy

Cathy,
I realize the reason is for safety reasons and not for adoption notification. What I am saying is, after dealing with the Embassy in person, I have NO confidence in them in helping anyone other than themselves if some major conflict or disaster occurred. My guess is if there were some major uprising or coup, they would be the first ones out of the county leaving us to fend for ourselves.

It is a good idea to register. If your family back home absolutely needs to get in touch with you while there it may be necessary for them to go throught the Embassy to do so. Maybe the hotel phone numbers you give your relatives are not correct, we had that problem. Thank goodness no emergencies came up at home. As for the Embassy personnel leaving before everyone else? Won't happen! Know people that have worked in Embassies in countries far less stable than most. These people will be there until they have no choice but to leave.

Mcidas: just so you know, the American Citizen Services Section (who you register with) is staffed by the department of state. Random investigations and preapprovals are handled by the department of homeland security. Those are two completely different branches of government.

Why register? Well, chronic earthquakes and erupting volcanoes might be a good reason. The best reason though is that crime happens to Americans almost every day in Guatemala. If you get mugged and lose all your money and your passport and are really scared you are going to want the embassy to help you. They can best do that if you register with them. Then you don't have to "prove" you are an American citizen, because all your info is already on file.

Just my .02

I agree with CSW and Mically..better to register than not to register..you never know what could happen.. better safe than sorry!
