I have been told I need to update (booster) my MMR & Tetnus shots.
I am also thinking of getting a Hep A and Hep B. Not just because of travel, for other reasons as well. Any advice?? Thanks

It is not required to have these vacinations to travel. Vacinations are only required when you are planning on staying in a foriegn country for long extended periods os time. I had the same question a year ago and that is what we told by the INS office. I think you should get the vacination for hepititis anyway as it is good to have.

Our doctor recommended Hep A and B and an updated Tetnus. Actually, the doctor at the International Adoption Center here also recommended Hep A and B. So, that's what we did.

All of those are good to have even if you aren't traveling...there are certainly plenty of cases of HEP right here in the good old USA. Of course the HEP B takes about 6 months to get...over the course of 3 different shots...so you might want to get started!!!

Our physician recommended Hep A & B as well as a tenatus booster. Since we were traveling on fairly short notice and had planned to put off the shots until after the holidays, we were able to take the short-series Hep B--in "emergency" cases they can be completed in three weeks; we were receiving two vaccinations a week for three weeks and had no side effects whatsoever.

Hi,
According to the CDC website, for international travel to Guatemala you are supposed to get a Hep A vaccine. For Guatemala City, Lake Atitlan and Antigua..no anti-malarials are needed. I already have the Hep B vaccine since I am a nurse. Check out the CDC website,,you can also e-mail them directly and tell them where you are going and they get right back to you and tell you what they recommend. I stayed at the Westin and Holiday Inn when I was there are felt pretty confident that Hep A would not be a problem. I did not get any vaccines my first trip, but was thinking about getting the Hep A this trip, just to make sure. Fondly, Cathy

BeBe,
I have been to Guatemala twice and our oldest daughter stayed six weeks there this summer. We didn't get any vacanations because we were in the city in an area that it really wasn't necessary for travel. However because our daughter stayed in remote villages, we did have her get all of her shots for travel. I think if you plan on going to outlying areas for any length of time you may want to get them, but otherwise it's really not necessary.
