hi Allesia, we are from WI, so I dont know if re-adoption rules are the same, but we have just started the proccess, we had to meet with our social worker, who completed our home study, and fill out a name change form, as we are changing her name and have it notarized, in Wi, we have to have 2 post visits, then you will need to file with the county you live in, go to court, the judge will issue a name change, then you can apply for a US birth certificate and SS. card and then you can apply for US citizenship, I know there is legal paperwork involved, we had a choice of the social worker and our agency doing it or hiring a attorney, we chose to have the agency, one less person to deal with, plus we have adopted before, so we are somewhat familiar with the court system. I would call your agency or whom ever did your home study and ask what you need to do for your state, maybe there is someone on the forum from your state that can help you. good luck! Mary

It completely depends upon the state...Georgia doesn't require any post-placement visits. We hired an attorney, who charged about $500 to handle our 'recognition of foreign adoption'.
I have a list of the order in which it is best to do things when you arrive home. I think this list makes a lot of sense. Good Luck! Will (for Guardianship Purposes) · Life Insurance · Readoption · U.S. Birth Certificate · Certificate of Citizenship (mandatory) You can download the correct form from the following site: http://www.ins.usdoj.gov/graphics/fo...orms/n-643.htm · Social Security · U.S. Passport (for Travel Purposes only; do not rely on this for citizenship) · Return of Original Documents (INS Form G884)

I can't find the forms that you mention and the web site you gave has moved. Can you check it out and see if you find them? Thanks Allesia also could you tell me a little more about the last form you mention. |

Allesia,
Try this link...it should answer your questions about how to get a Certificate of Citizenship. http://www.bcis.gov/graphics/publica...ets/chowto.htm I think since the office is now BCIS instead of INS, all of the websites have changed. You may not be able to download the form any longer...you may have to call to order one. The "Return Of Orginial Documents" form is done AFTER your C of C is received and your social security number is correct (don't let them give you an 'alien' number...be sure you get one for a citizen). This form allows you to have all of those 'secret' papers that are in the envelope that you give INS when you return to the US when you bring your child home. It has all the copies of your adoption paperwork, etc. You get all of those originals back. It's nice to have (I hear...haven't received mine back yet!)

Becky - if a child is admitted via an IR3 Visa, they are automatically U.S. Citizens. So if we get the readoption, passport, and social security card as well, why would we have to get a certificate of citizenship as well? just wonderin'..... thanks! |

You have no real 'proof' of citizenship...even with an IR3 Visa. This is especially important if your child ever travels outside of the US...many people think that a passport is proof of citizenship, but it is not.
It's best in the long run to spend the $125 (I think that's the fee) to have this very important document...it may save your child problems as he/she grows up.

When we got back from Peru, my husband did all the paperwork himself for us to readopt him in the state of maryland,,no lawyer,,then at that time, we had to go through INS and make him a US citizen,,,we also had to have three post placement visits over a six month period.
