Hi everyone....
My husband and I are looking into adopting a second child. Our first was a domestic placement. While watching adoption stories, I saw a couple that adopted a 12 year old girl. In the story they say that most older children are not adopted. The older children were crying that they were not selected. We are considering adopting an older child like this. We would like to give them a fresh start and whole new life. Can anyone tell me if the fee's are as high as adopting an infant? Also, we learned that they speak Spanish there. Has anyone adopted an older child and had to take language courses? This is something we are considering. Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

I met a couple recently with four adopted young children. They are now adopting a 13 year old from Guat.; they indicated that it was only about half the money to get an older child. Not sure what agency they are using; just thought I would pass the info on to you. Sounded like they still went thru all the same paperwork, courts, etc. and are waiting on the Hague situation like everyone else waiting on babies, but the cost sounded definitely way less. Vicki

older child
We are in the process of adopting an 8 yo. The cost was less but all of the paperwork is the same. We speak some Spanish, but not enough! We have talked to her on the phone and she has answered some of our questions such as favorites and such. It shall be an exciting experience.

Last year when I was visiting Guatemala..we went to an Orphanage/Hospital..and there was a boy there that was questioning my husband about how he could come to the U.S....and I didn't think about him until you gals started this post...what an excellent idea to adopt an older child...this boy was 15 and had a spinal abnormality...I want to make another trip down there to the hospital to see if he's still there...you know what I would even bring him back here just so he could get the medical care he needs....thanks gals for this post..this has me excited!!! Sincerely, Brenda....

Thanks everyone for your help!!!
It is good to know that they do not charge as high a fee as they would for an infant. Since that is the case, my husband and I are now considering adoping two children, older child and a younger child from the same country. It would be nice to get siblings but I know that is not usually possible.

Siblings
I know that Caroline Tiffin has worked with placing sibling groups and has had some older children/younger children siblings on her website.
I have also seen sibling groups posted on the precious.org website, but since I "know" Caroline better I would recommend that you see if she can help you out. Her website is at http://www.palmetto-adopt.com Good luck!
