Getting your Letter online

I often get questions about netwroking forwarded to me directly, and I wanted to share this one with everyone. I was asked:

As for getting the letter on the internet. . .can you assist with that as well? What are the costs for posting on the net? One site I looked at was $2500. Is that about average?

My reply:

Eek! Waaaaayyyy too much. If you want to list your letter online, your best dollar value is going to be in a registry like the one at adoption.com. It'll be a few hundred bucks, but a lot cheaper than posting classified ads in Sunday papers. There is a list of them, free and fee, posted in the Dear Birthmother letter and Networking forum I host on AdoptionBoards.com. It should give you a place to start.

If you want your own site (a good idea. It won't attract much traffic, but it will give you a place to refer BPs to to see more pictures and stuff about you), get a cheap hosting company like 1dollarhosting.com and a cheap build-your-own-website software like Frontpage and put it up yourself. It's pretty easy and shouldn't cost more than $100 or so (maybe a bit more for the software). If you don't want to do it yourself, put up a notice at your local high school or junior college looking for someone to design your site. Most kids can do it nowadays, and if they have even the slightest artistic sensibility, it will look fine. Pay them another $100 and be done with it.
