I have permanent guardianship of my sister's child (Angela) and have had perm. guar. for 3 years. Angela's mother is a life time drug addict (with brief periods of sobriety) and contested the guardianship. We (actually, I - simply a misunderstanding as we prepared the initial paperwork ourselves) were eventually awarded guardianship by a judge with the support of my family. My sister (Angela's mother) has seen Angela one time since we have had her. Angela turned 9 in March. We would like to adopt Angela but do not have the financial (or emotional) resources for a long court battle. Her mother will almost surely contest an adoption. We want to give Angela a sense of permanency but also don't want to "upset the applecart". Angela's father is dead and his family
would likely be in support of an adoption. We are at a bit of a loss about how to proceed.
