want to adopot and afraid I will be turned down

Hi. My husband and I want to adopt a child. I have suffered with depression in the past and am taking antidepressants. I am afraid that I will be turned down as an adoptive parent bc I have this problem. Does anyone have any information about this? Thanks for any help!!

Amy, having depression that is treated should not be a problem for having your HS approved. Good luck!!

I sincerely doubt this would be a reason for you to not be approved. However, I would talk to the worker/agency you are considering. Depending on your agency and whether you're going domestic or international, there might be country guidelines involved as well.

Minibus, that is better advice (I was thinking this was domestic)....This COULD be a problem for certain countries in international adoption, but shouldn't be for domestic (though calling agencies and asking ahead of time if THEY have a problem with it, would probably be best). GOOD LUCK!!

What the PP's said. As long as you are being treated, it shouldn't be a problem. Just be upfront with the agency.

Thanks everyone for the responses. I am very new to all of this and I'm REALLY nervous. Your information has helped. I guess I just have to take it one small step at a time. I have wanted to adopt for a long time and now that we're ready to start the process I'm kind of freaking out!!

It is possible to adopt while taking anti depressants. DH is bipolar and takes meds for depression, mania and anxiety. You have to jump through some extra hoops and have tough skin, but it is possible. We adopted DS from Guatemala in August. Make sure that this is one of the first things you ask when you are considering an agency. It will save you a lot of time and research.
