Adoption Budget

A lot of the information packets I've received request that an adoption budget be part of the homestudy or sent in to the agency. Is this an overall in depth budget of what we think the adoption is going to cost or what we're willing to spend on an adoption? Can someone give me a little more insight into this? Thanks!

I think its standard for agencies to have a family complete an overall budget--expenses vs. income, assets, etc. Not as far as what you can/expect to spend in the adoption, but to make sure you are financially stable to raise a child.

We had to list assets, liabilities, life insurance, 401K info, everything. They just want to make sure you can afford to adopt and to raise a child. There are some federal guidelines for minimum income per dependent, too.

Thanks for responding. That seems more like a request for a financial statement than a budget.

We too had to give a list of all our assets, retirement, etc.

It could be an adoption budget. For instance if you can only spend x amount, that might rule you out for any pbmoms who do not have medical insurance or who need a lot of living expenses. I have heard of agencies asking what your budget is so they know who to show you to. I would call the agency and ask what it means!
