advice needed
OK everyone bear with me. I have a question that is probably so no brainer...but Im new to domestic adoption so need help.
Once we are homestudy approved we are going to try to seek a ** on our own initially. My question is this... Do we need to have a lawyer first? What does that cost? Do we just call and say we are interested in adoption and want a lawyer on hold??? Or what do we say? Does anyone have any recommendations in NC (where we live)? Once we locate a ** do we then call the lawyer and go from there? Or what are the steps? We are willing to talk to ** without representation, however dont want to break any laws in the process. We will NOT pay a penny without a lawyer involved--dont worry. Thanks for any advice/help. PM if you prefer. |

With your questions I would contact an adoption lawyer first and see what your laws are. Most will give you a free consulation first. That should help you get started. Ask for NC people to pm you with any lawyer info. It is easier when you have a reference to act on.

I'd go interview a couple of lawyers first so that you can find one you feel comfortable with and have an idea of what you are looking at in terms of cost.
Talk with them about whether they assist with finding birthmothers (some have a loose network because they've done adoption work for a long time, others want you to do the legwork on finding a PBM) Ask questions about how the process works in your state---have them walk you through each step. Also ask about the attorney's fee structure---is it a flat rate or per hour charge? Do they require a retainer? How much? Do they have a list of recommendations for birthmother services (e.g.medical/counseling)? Have they handled a contested adoption before? What was the outcome? How are birthmother expenses handled, and what are the restrictions in your state on those expenses? What kinds of expenses should you expect to pay for? Can the attorney provide referrals if the pbm needs or wants her own counsel? If you go back through the threads on this board, you'll see some other good questions to ask. Good luck! |
