Hi,
My husband and I are hoping to adopt a Latino infant domestically. We have a 5 year old high functioning autistic daughter. She is well adjusted in the family and attends regular school with an aide. How much and in what detail must I discuss my daughter's circumstances in the homestudy and in discussions with adoption professionals? I think the word autistic might scare potential birthmoms. My guess is that I should say that she has special needs and discuss her abilities in positive terms (not to hard to do, she has made great strides.) Thanks for any advice, And if anyone has experience with this from the professional or parenting side, I'd love to hear. |

I would definately let your sw know of your daughters autism. And just like you stated that she is gifted and making wonderful strides in school and social life. It sounds like she is a wonderful person and would make a great big sister. Not everyone will judge her and the right pbmom will want to have parents that are nurturing and loving no matter what a child might be like. Good luck in your journey.
