What kind of instructions did you give the people you asked to write letters of reference for your home study?

Sorry... I'm not much help. Our agency contacted the references directly with their own forms. You might ask the agency what they are looking for. The questions our references were asked were things like "How are they prepared to parent?" "Have you seen them with children?" "Would you leave your kids with them for a period of time?" "What do you know about their plans for their family's future?" "How do their personalities mesh with parenting?" HTH...

I told my references to be honest and to not worry that i was NOT going to read them. If you are worried that someone will give you a bad reference, ask them if they are comfortable giving you a reference to being a good parent...or say something like that, then see what they say. Now one of my girlfriends did call me and ask me if I could help her with some parts (wording, etc). HTH!!!

This is what we wrote to the people we asked to do references for us. I changed a few things due to agency names etc. in the letter but these are the things we asked.

Thank You for writing a reference to assist us in our endeavor to adopt a baby.

Our agency is asking that you send a written reference addressed to “ To whom it may concern”.
Please address the capacity in which you know us, length of time you have known us, about our personal integrity and Character, your perception or observations regarding our parenting skills, and any personal comments.
After the references are received a representative from our agency may call you to verify the written reference.
