My potential attorney is a member of these 2 groups:

The Academy of California Adoption Lawyers and The American Academy of Adoption Attorneys.

Does that really mean anything? I checked out his info with the state bar and all looks good -- I'm just wondering if membership in these associations is meaningful, or does it just mean he paid some dues to get his name on a snazzy list?

We're in the process of an adoption in Guatemala that may get put on hold or stopped completely if a new law passes (we are all on pins and needles over on the Guatemala forum!!), so I'm researching (again) the possibility of domestic adoption just in case. A woman my mom knows who had 2 successful interstate adoptions has recommended this attorney very highly, so we may be calling him soon if this law in Guatemala passes.

The American Academy of Adoption Attorneys is a by-invitation-only professional organization of attorneys who specialize in adoption. "Quad A" attorneys have a demonstrated interest and level of experience in adoption. Not any attorney can join - they must already have experience and interest in adoption.

For more on the association, go to www.adoptionattorneys.com.

Note: As with any professional organization, this is not a 'guarantee' that the attorney's experience and skills will meet your needs. You should always ask them for their experience in your particiular type/area of adoption, along with fees and references. Check with the state bar association to ensure they're licensed and have no sanctions.
