Not sure what age range you're hoping to adopt, but here are two books I've read.

REALLY GOOD: "Adopting the Older Child" by Claudia L. Jewett. Excellent info on attachement issues, behaviour, probelm solving, based on hypothetical but very typical "cases."

OK: "Raising Adopted Children" by Lois Riskai Melina. This book tries to cover more territory, including a fair amount on open adoption, so it's less detailed, but it's a reasonable place to start, particularly if you're not sure which route you'd like to use to adopt.

I got them both through amazon.com

Reading Material

Hi!

I highly recommend the following books:

[EDITED]

[Edited To Remove the URL to a Retail or “Fee Based Service” website.]

Please remember that the posting of Retail Websites on the forums is not allowed, this includes links to eBay auctions and profiles.

Also, books by Christine Adamec and Lois Melina are generally accepted as good reads. All of the above are in my local Barnes & Noble, so they should be available wherever books are sold. (I sound like an advertisement. Sorry.)

Finally, the magazine Adoptive Families is one of the few devoted to adoption. A subscription is worth every penny!

Good luck,
Robyn C.

Hi folks!

Please remember that when discussing books, you can share titles, authors and ISBN numbers...but URL's to retail sites that offer the book for sale is not allowed.

Thanks!

I've got some suggestions for you:

Twenty Things Adoptive Kids Wish Their Adoptive Parents Know
Adopting the Hurt Child
The Primal Wound
The Post Adoption Blues

Also, since you're just getting started, it is good that you do research on the type of therapy you prefer. In adoption cases dealing with attachment issues, there are two main categories: for holding therapy; and not for holding therapy. I suggest you spend an equal amount of time reseaching the topic of holding therapy if you intend to adopt, especially an older child. Peace to you.

Apparently, when I copied and pasted, the links remained active. I thought I changed them... darn computer! I do apologize for the links.
Here are just the plain titles for the books:
The Adoption Resource Book
The Complete Adoption Handbook
Is Adoption for You?
Adopting in America

Hope this helps!
