Will history of depression factor in ability to adopt?

I have had a few bouts of depression and have taken Cellexa and Zoloft. Mild. Episodic. Runs in the family (as, I'm learning most depression does).

Will this make it impossible for me to adopt? How will this be viewed in an aldready tough process such as adoption?

Please advise.

If you are adopting from the United States, it probably won't matter. You'll need to be honest about it, and will probably need a letter from your doctor saying that it doesn't negatively affect your ability to parent. The same sort of letter that people with other medical issues get.

But if you're adopting from another country, then you'll need to be more careful, and ask that question at the beginning of the process. There may be countries that will not permit someone with that diagnosis to adopt from them. Each country sets it's own rules, and they're rarely negotiable. So ask that question of your chosen agency before you pay them any money. They should be able to show you other families with a person with that diagnosis who have succesfully adopted if it isn't a problem for that country.

Good luck!
