Foster care license?

.....As I read the different adoption forums, this has been mentioned frequently and I am just curious now. Do you have to have a foster license to adopt an infant domestically? Or is this just required in some states and not in others. Our Agency has not mentioned anything to me about being licensed to foster before we can adopt. I know that in order to adopt through the state, one must first become a foster parent....but I didnt think one had to do this if they adopted domestically through an agency?

Any info on this??

According to my agency, as long as the birth parents have signed the relinquishment papers, the baby can go home with adoptive parents.

However, if the birth parents have not yet signed the relinquishment papers, the baby can only be released from the hospital to someone who is licenced to do foster care.

(Here, the relinquishment cannot be signed until 72 hours after birth, but often the baby is ready to be discharged earlier than that--the choices then are placement with people with a foster care licence or an extra day in the hospital.)

Hope that makes sense!

Fostercare is a whole seperate issue then adoption. You do not have to have a foster license in order to adopt. In some states, a child may be released from the hospital to a short term foster home while the birthmother's paperwork is being completed. Most places that require this only need about 10 days.

it is a seperate issue but in some stats you need to have a foster license to adopt.
It's weird I know but it is true for the state of IL anyway.

Foster Care license

When I Adopted my 10 year old Daughter Internationally from India, in California I did not have to be Licensed for Foster Care.

The Family who introduced us lives in Illinois and she had to be Foster Care Licensed for both children. Our Daughters were Adopted from the same Orphanage.

It's Bananas that the states are not uniform, for what are totally very Identical Adoptions.

Someone posted this morning that they did not have to be fingerprinted for their Homestudy either!

What's that about?

No, it's not. Where did you get this information?

Our state doesn't fingerprint for adoption. They do do a child abuse and criminal background check.

Well, that's very interesting. Out of the adoptive parents I work with in Illinois, only one was a foster parent and she did that by choice. I still say you do not have to have a foster license to adopt an infant in Illinois.

I really do not see a need for you to contact me privately. Since you have not adopted an unattached child with a specific care need or done an adoption where open discussion might offend someone, any discussions should be fine to do on an open forum.

Since you have not adopted yet, you can ask your questions on the open forum. I cannot think of anything that would require us to have a private conversation.

Also,I'm not trying to be rude, but it is really not necessary to recopy every post you're replying to.

Every state has its own regulations. In addition, agencies often have additional regulations. It is best to decide what type of adoption you wish to do, who you wish to adopt through and then discuss with them what regulations there are. I did not do my homestudy in Illinois as I do not live there. You may wish to post your question on the Illinois section of the baord.
