My husband and I are about to start our profile letter to the birth mothers. Please please can anyone help us with web sites or books that we can use to assist. We are very excited but nervous at the same time. Thank you

Lightbulb Here is what I did...

Hi, Danielle!

So sorry I've not responded before now. Please accept my apology for the slow reply.

When I was told we would have to write a letter to a person or persons unknown in hopes that they would decide to choose us to raise their baby, I was petrified! What would I say? How would I ever convey the hopes and dreams I have for the baby or babies that we will be entrusted to raise?

I decided that the best way to start was to do some homework and see what other waiting adoptive parents had written, maybe it would give me some inspiration and some insight into what information the birth parents are looking to find in these letters. As I read these letters, (and I probably read several hundred), I began to see that this was just a way for us to introduce ourselves and our lifestyle to the birthparents so they could see if our families and dreams were a reasonable match.

The best place to find the profiles that will give you your inspiration is to look at groups of waiting adoptive parents that are similar to you. In other words, if you are a deeply religious person and are going with an agency that has those requirements for their couples, then look at letters written by couples working with agencies who have a religious requirement. If this doesn't match you, then find some variables that do and read profiles of couples who fit within this grouping.

The whole point of the letter is to show the birth parents who you are so the right baby for your family can be placed with you. Nothing fancy is necessary, only that what you write come from your heart and that you be totally honest with no bragging or exaggeration. Just let your desire for motherhood and willingness to love someone else's baby show in your words.

I know this post doesn't give any specifics and that you were probably hoping for something other than what I've told you. But the problem is... this is not rocket science, and we tend to make it harder than it needs to be. Just write a letter to a friend you haven't met yet, and tell her about your life and your dreams.

Good luck, and may God bless your efforts to become a mother.

I'm so pleased I could help! Your reply brought tears to my eyes, I was in turn touched that you found such comfort in my post. It definitely makes me feel that the time I spend on here is worthwhile. Thank you for giving a measure of meaning to my efforts.
