Gal

We are smack dab in the middle of our adoption All is going well. We have a judge that had been appointed , he has been given legal councle( we get to pay for it) and a GAL has been appointed. The court chose to do this, we live in KS and I assume that this is standard. My question is who pays for the GAL. All that I could find for my state is info in foster cases. In that type of case, the court has a fund and it is paid for. Any info would be great.

Also, he is in prison and his mom is contacting the attorney. I know that he gets a kick out of the fact that I have to pay for his attorney. I fear that they will do all they can to drive the bill up.In fact I feel that is one of the reasons that he does not sign the TPR. Is there any way to put a cap on this. I do not feel that I should have to pay for his mom calling and talking to the atty every day. Also she is tying to get g-parents rights with this too. I am not responsable for that under any law. How do I make sure that I only pay for what I have to.

I am new here, but um, WHY do you have to pay for the attorney? I am a stepmom adopting my stepson, and we are in the first 30 days after the notice has been served, so I am still holding the breath, but no one has said a WORD about if the court appoints her a lawyer, us having to pay...we are in TN, by the way. Our lawyer only tells us that she will have to hire her own. But then ours is also an abandonment case. Maybe that is why?
sorry so clueless.

In our state it the parent is not able to pay, it can be held as the adoptiove parents responsibilty. In our case the county picked up the cost of the GAL and his attorney

Just wanted to give some sympathy because we are in a very similar situation. We not only have to pay OUR lawyer fees and the GAL fees but HIS lawyer fees as well (he is also incarcerated). His mother AND sister have already called the lawyer multiple times as well and it frustrates me to no end that it's money our of our family's pocket for them to call and rant and rave NOW after all the time that there has been no contact. Grrrr.

I am not sure that there is anyway you can "cap" the contact. Our GAL got to the point where he just didn't return phone calls from that side of the family because he no longer needed any info from them and knew what they were up to.
