Step parent adoption

Me and my husband had been married for almost 2 years. he is wanting to adopt my son. the biological father has not seen him in almost 4 years and is about 13,000 in back child support. is there any way i can do this without retaining a lawyer and do i need the BF permission? If there is any way that i can do this without having to have any contact with him that would be better. He was very abusive. I had a PPO on him for a year and he did spend some time in jail for assault. I dont know if that would be an advantage for me or not. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
