Help! Where should I begin?
I have been searching (without much luck) for information on where to begin the process of step parent adoption and some general information about it (requirements, procedures, etc.) . I ran across this board and was wondering if anyone has any idea on where I can go to start the process or get good information. Can it be done without the expense of a lawyer?
A background: I have a 6 year old daughter that my husband (of 2 years) wants to adopt (he is the only father she has ever known). My daughter's bio father lives in TX (we live in MD) and pays support periodically (once a year if that), but I have not talked to him in 5 years and do not know how to contact him. I don't believe he would contest, but I also don't believe he would make an effort to sign necessary paperwork. Naturally my husband and I would like this process to go as quicklyl and smoothly as possible (is that possible?), but are willing to do whatever to have it done. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! |

Have you tried calling the Department of Social Services in your County? That is what I did and they helped me with some of the information I needed.
Although my situation is a bit different than yours. I will be the step parent who is doing the adopting. I cannot wait for it to happen. I just hope she doesn't try to contest since she hasn't seen him or been invovled since he was 2 days old! Anyway keep me posted on how it goes for you! |
