Anyone else done a pro se non-contested stepparent adoption in Il?
My husband is adopting our son...I say our son...because the man that was present at conception has been absent ever since...and my husband has been in his place ![]() I started the process today...mailed out the consent form, and working on the Petition for Adoption…I have an appointment with a legal advisor at the law library tomorrow…I’m excited! I did find out that the fee’s involved are a lot less than what I was lead to believe initially…which is a plus! The lady said that the entire process would take about 4 months from the first court date! YaY! Look forward to talking to others !

Good Luck, I'm actually going through the same thing. We filed back in June & we have a court date on Monday. My ex boyfriend lives in Greece & he has only seen my son for two hours within the last 3 years. He hasn't paid child support in three years too. but he calls my son every sunday. My son doesn't even consider him his dad. The man that has been taking care of him for the last 3 1/2 years is his dad!!! My son is only 5 years old. I'm hoping that just b/c my ex is going to come back & fight it, doesn't mean we won't win. If I died tomorrow, my husband, my daughter and all the rest of my family would be without my son, b/c my ex has rights to come & take him to Greece!!! Please pray for me & I'll do the same for you! I just have alittle advice for you, this has actually kept me sane for the few months. God wants whats best for our children. And I know that he would never let anything bad happen. Just have faith that things will work out in the end!! I know from experience (I feel like I'm writing a book) My ex actually took me to court to have visitation in Greece. I fought it & prayed so hard that it wouldn't happen. The funny thing is, is that the judge was going to allow it all long as my ex did a few things to prove to the judge that he wasn't going to kidnap him. Well, lets just say my ex didn't do what he was suppose to do & my prayer was answered. My son never went to Greece!

All I want to say is good luck. Things are pretty easy if the other parent does not contest the adoption.
For some reason, birth parents are really really protected. I am going through a contested adoption right now. My ex has not paid child support in three years, and has not visited in two. He did not respond to the petition, and the judge kept giving him more and more time to respond. Finally, the parents of the birth father responded. He has a violent past, has abused my son when he did see him, and now that someone wants to adopt and take care of him, he is protesting. This is a losing battle because the judge will rarely take away any rights, unless there is a criminal conviction involved. Even worse, the other side is blatantly lying about their involvment, of course, trying to make themselves look good. I am trying to keep my head up, but this is very depressing. I do not know why unfit parents are so protected, and have the right to abuse their children. But that is what I am hearing. I am just taking comfort in the fact that our new family is in tact, an that no one can change that, despite what stupid judge rules. |

The legal forms for DuPage County can be found in the Law Library at the county office in Wheaton. You can make copies, and file them right there. Good luck!

consent for adoption
I have found the consent for adoption forms. I take it that this is what I need to get the biological dad to fill out. I am concerned though that in my research I found some information that that consent must be signed in the presence of a judge. Is there a way to get the consent without him having to travel to IL? He definately is not one to make an effort for anything.
