Michigan Interstate Adoption Agencies?

We are seeking to adopt a special needs child. We have been matched with an out of state child and our agency is discouraging it. We need to transfer ASAP. Can anyone recommend a good agency in MI that willingly does interstate adoptions?

It's realy funny that we have soooo many kids who need adoptive homes, but when you try to cross state lines, the workers try so hard to discourage it or sabotage it. I know they are supposed to encourage in state adoptions, but please....kids are kids

Hi True, did you ever find your answers for interstate adoption? I just found a waiting sibling group on adoptuskids.org and they are in a different state. We live in MI. I haven't talked to my adoption worker yet but we are working with Lutheran Adoption Services (on another adoption). They specialize in foster child adoptions. From what I know, this is the only type of adoption they do. Maybe you can find an office in your area & call them to see what they know about interstate foster adoption & if they are willing to work with you. Many blessings!

So are you more likely to be able to adopt if you go through an agency when doing foster to adopt, or the state.. I am so confused. Sorry.

Just posting back with what ended up being our experience. We were initially with a state contracted agency(i.e. DHS contracts to these agencies). This agency would not complete the interstate agency. We could have stayed with them, but ultimately, once the ICPC was filed, the state of MI would have had to come out and do a whole new home study.

We ended up switching to a full private agency. Best move we made throughout this whole process. We paid out of pocket for our new home study and the new agency completed it in 3 weeks(as opposed to our state funded agency which took 6 months).

Our ICPC ended up taking only a week and they even apologized for taking that long! We plan to adopt again and I will use the same private agency.

Hope that helps!
